There is no better time to celebrate social workers and human services managers than during Social Work Month!
An interview with the Executive Director of the Network for Social Work Management: Lakeya Cherry, MSSW
Q: When did Social Work Management Week start?
A: Social Work Management Week began just two years ago in March of 2015 when I decided the Network needed a week solely dedicated to recognizing managers and the organizations they lead within our profession. It provides a great opportunity to celebrate their outstanding achievements and shine a light on the managers that are the backbone of the many efforts around the world that address our most vexing social problems.
Q: Why did you decide to start Social Work Management Week?
A: As a proud social worker, I always took part in celebrating Social Work Month as a way to recognize the profession and spread awareness about the challenging and inspirational work we take part in everyday. As an organization that believes in the importance of addressing our international leadership gap, we felt strongly about the need to devote a week of awareness and celebration to those specifically occupying leadership roles. Today, as those belonging to the baby-boomer generation retire, we face a sense of urgency within our social service organizations to develop and take on new managers and leaders. Studies upon studies have pointed to the rising need for management positions and how this demand is expected to rise by around 21% from 2012 to 2022, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. There is perhaps no better time for this week of celebration! We look forward to your participation!
To be clear though, this is not a new social issue. The Network for Social Work Management was created more than 30 years ago by a group of seasoned social work managers. It was their belief that social work managers needed to have their own professional organization committed to supporting them in their unique challenges, along with the development of their professional expertise. They understood that as social workers climb up the ladder and make the shift into managerial positions, the training they need is different from those working directly with clients.
I’m proud to say that since then, the Network has developed a set of practice standards to help equip our leaders with indicators and tools they need for success. We currently have 14 university partners that are using these standards as a curriculum guide to teach our aspiring social workers throughout the nation. We also hold annual training institutes for both emerging leaders and doctoral students that take place at our official NSWM Annual Management Conference. Additionally, our online platform allows us to be there for you whenever and wherever. Join our Network for free and catch us online as we offer access to a host of trainings, blogs and programs!
Q: When does the Network’s Annual Management Conference take place?
A: This year our Annual Management Management Conference takes place in NYC at Fordham University from June 15-16. We are very excited about this year’s conference theme: The Business of Social Work-Mission, Morals, Morale & Money. Now more than ever, a blended skill set of clinical and business expertise is needed within our field of human services. This year our conference will be filled with thought provoking sessions that will challenge popular belief and prove just how business savvy social workers actually are! You won’t want to miss it!
